‡ King Hussein, a controversial figure in Middle Eastern affairs, ruled from 1953 until his death in 2000. Although he tried to maintain cordial relations with the West, he opposed the Egypt-Israel peace agreement of 1979, endorsed the Palestine Liberation Organization, and refused to join the alliance against Iraq during the Persian Gulf War.  3
