republic (1996 est. pop. 2,528,000), 132,046 sq mi (342,000 sq km), W central Africa. The Congo is bordered on the west by Gabon; on the north by Cameroon and the Central African Republic; on the east and southeast by the Democratic Republic of the Congo; and on the southwest by Cabinda, an Angolan exclave, and by the Atlantic Ocean. Brazzaville is the capital and largest city. Other important cities include Pointe-Noire and Loubomo.
