This notion again connects to the idea of searching for reality and to communicate within self. Education must teach young individuals to constantly be critical of self, and to communicate within their self-conscious in order to understand that everything that they do is not for themselves, or for the sake of others, but to serve something greater than us. At this point, however, individuals must understand that to some extent, there will always be failure. Humans are not born to be perfect, and therefore there is constant conflict between the ideal image and self. However, by being conscious that they are born to continuously follow the image of the ideal, it serves as a reason to be a better and greater person. In today’s society it is harder to teach young individuals of their consciousness because the world is ever evolving rapidly and these individuals are becoming a mechanism to serve the ideal of the society. It is important to teach with combination of freedom of thoughts and expression so that they are able to freely express and formulate their purpose. An American essayist, H.L. Mencken stated, “The average man does not want to be free. He simply wants be safe”. I disagree with this statement because an “average man” wants to live. In order to live you must have two necessities; freedom and safety. I believe neither is more important than one another because being free gives you the opportunity to a safe nation, and a safe nation allows you to be free. You cannot live a life without exploring and growing because that would not be considered living. On the other hand, you cannot expect to be free without safety around you.

Jim Morrison has once said, “The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask.” We as human being are free from birth. We are given the ability to choose. This freedom makes us who we are as human being. Each individual make choices and learn through consequences. Through the consequences, we learn and the learning becomes experience. Through experience we slowly shape into who we want to be as human. This is the reason why we as humans are so special. Each individual is unique from others. Each of us has different ethical moral rights and wrong. Each of us has something we like and dislike. Each of us are different. Therefore,

From the earlier times in our lives till now, we humans have been struggling hard to be free and independent of the things that limit our right to be free. And even though some people say that having security in life can regulate our lives and messy societies, I believe that too much security or limitation causes more dilemmas. Also, by being independent and free, one can learn new things rather than just by sticking to some widely held beliefs. It has been said that ignorance is bliss and if we do not know that something more exists, we do not yearn for it. It has also been said that the door to enlightenment and inner wisdom, once opened, can never be closed again. Many great philosophers and teachers have dealt with the idea of whether it is better to live a life of servitude and submission, or are we to pursue a life of personal happiness and emotional freedom.

Modern day Pakistan’s land has traditionally been Muslim for many years. In the early nineteenth century it was ruled by Britain and considered part of the British Indian Empire. In 1947, a partition was granted from the British, and Pakistan and India were created as their own countries. As the previous British Empire divided,

“When a person places the proper value on freedom, there is nothing under the sun that he will not do to acquire that freedom.”

This prominent statement truly encompasses all facets of not only what is meant by freedom but also what it is to have freedom in the great United States. The importance of this statement also is that it provides the basis for the system of government. For the people of the United States, being able to freely exercise your own thoughts, speech and say religion is something that is essential in all human life. To not be able to have access to those would be seen as crime. For them freedom means they have the rights to live, to be free of restriction, oppression and control. While these rights may be fundamental, they also in fact very crucial.

The notion of free society depends on growth. Widely seen as the catalyst of this movement and defender of democracy, America revolutionized the role of government in a nation with the Bill of Rights. Nearly 250 years later, personal liberties are ingrained in ethics and serve as the foundation of organization. Over time, these morals have changed to suit the needs of the people. As history has shown, resistance is the only path to reformation. Differentiation is the beginning of evolution, not just scientifically, but socially. Without it, outdated concepts would remain in power hindering growth, said best by Thomas Jefferson, “The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants,”. Free society requires individuals’ critical thinking in order to foster its progression. As civilization presses forward, it is clear to see peaceful resistance not only betters humanity, but is essential to the journey of acceptance and unity.

My family and I are immigrants from Pakistan. Even though I assimilated into American culture, in our house Pakistani tradition/culture prevails. We speak Urdu in the house, eat the food, wear the traditional clothing, listen to Pakistani folk music; and in the mix of the traditions are Islamic influences. What is so unique about this culture is that religion has been integrated into it, and the traditions I carry out, I consider normal. For example the food, Pakistani cuisine has a wide variety but there is a certain way the food should be prepared, more specifically the meat. Pork or pork products are not used in cooking, in Islam pigs are considered an unclean animal, thus forbidden. It is preferable to use alternatives such as goat, cow or chicken, but there is a certain way the animal should be slaughtered. Another example where religion is present in culture is the music. There is a special type of music called ‘Quawwil,’ (equivalent to Christian Gospel music), where a group of musicians come together and sing about Allah/God, the prophets, notably pious figures, or teachings. The language these tunes are usually sung in is Urdu with Arabic and is a common genre of music in Pakistani culture.

We should be able to reason, think and have our own opinions without the influence of others. We cannot be scared or cowardly for making our own decision or thoughts in life. To be able to think for ourselves and speak our mind with reason will give us the courage. With this courage, we gain freedom from our thoughts which in return give us the enlightenment. Kant stated “for the public to enlighten itself; indeed, if it is only given freedom, enlightenment is almost inevitable” (Kant, 1748). Staying stagnant in our ways or laziness in the ways we think or let others think for us can be dangerous grounds for our own benefit. The nature of human beings can stay in the state and not willing to move forward from what “guardians” have instilled in our minds.
