Cultural Identities In Remember The Titans

When you watch a Disney made movie you can always count on a few things. One, that there is a hero and a villain. Two, there is a moral of the story. Lastly, there is a happy ending that leaves you feeling good. Remember the Titans was not just a typical Disney made movie but one of culture and power.

Racism, prejudice, compassion and love is what you get when you break down Remember the Titans. The movie deals with a high school football team that's been integrated and the team has to learn to deal with each other. This is true not just for the players but the coaches as well. They have to overcome huge obstacles dealing with racism and prejudice within the team, school and town.

Coach Boone, Yoast, Bertier and Campbell all come from different backgrounds and have different cultural identities. Yoast has always been a head coach of an all-white team in an all-white football league and doesn’t know how to handle colored players but is will to change. Boone is the opposite he has always been a head coach of an all-black school with all-black players. Bertier is a home-grown Virginia boy who was raised that if you aren’t white you aren’t right. They go on to win the state championship and finish the season with a perfect 13-0 record.

The film wasn’t about that 13-0 record and winning a state championship, but the struggle that came with it and all the hardships they had to deal and get past. Racism, prejudice, compassion and love were all key aspects of this film as shown. The racism, prejudice of the team when they first met was severe and had been changed. The love and compassion came as the team grew to become one unit and love each other and be able to become something more powerful than they could be by themselves.

Remember the Titans was made to show you what it was like to be white and be black in an integrated school for the first time. There were many hardships but the power of having equality, common goals and supportive authority gave the players and coaches the push they needed to become the team they were. Racial harmony is not as easy as a Disney made movie makes it seem but showing the growing populace even today that it is possible gives what we are fighting for even today more
