College Is Not For College

In Caroline Bird, “College is a waste of time and money,” Bird discusses why college is not necessary for everyone. She states that many college students are in college not because they want to but because they have to. Bird came to realize that college students don’t feel needed. They are led to believe that getting a college degree is important because it’s a way of getting higher chance of financial success which from Bird’s point of view is not always true. She gives examples of college students who have graduated and came to realize that college was a waste of time and money.

W.J. Reeves, a professor of English at the Brooklyn College of the City University of New York, offers his idea of college being too easy to access and with that low retention standards. He begins by stating that 15 million Americans attend college and of those 15 million, half should not be enrolled. Reeves believes that students entering college fresh out of high school are not ready for the challenges college will bring to them due to grade inflation while being in high school. He also argues against colleges in regards that they do not influence one 's ability to expand their intelligence and readiness for the workforce.

For many Americans, going to college is indeed the logical step after high school, but there are many alternatives to college. The best strategy for high schools to help students decide what to do after high school is to start preparing them academically with college courses from their ninth grade year until they reach their twelfth grade year. Reason being, most students are concerning of the college workloads while they are still in high school. At the end of their twelfth grade, they become very hesitating to even fill out one college application. But, once they get exposed to this level, they will be very confident to enroll in the higher education level.

Today many high school students are trying see if college education would good idea for future jobs or careers. After finishing high school people go through a dilemma on whether or not they want to continue their education. They could either go to college or begin working as just a highschool graduate. Its great to start taking college courses, which are offered through a student's local high school, so that he or she may better understand what college will be like. Along with this, when taking courses in high school, students often get a bargain, for these class credits are usually much cheaper. Yet, taking early college classes also have some negative aspects. First of all, because these subjects tend to be harder than regular high school classes, they could give students the wrong idea of what college will be like. Second, a student's overall high school Grade Point Average, (GPA), may suffer, if the student is not quite ready for college level studies. Nonetheless, by taking early college classes, students are able to take advantage of an excellent opportunity to work on their first college level subjects, in a more familiar and less threatening high school

“In fall 2016, some 20.5 million students are expected to attend American colleges and universities, constituting an increase of about 5.2 million since fall 2000” (National Center for Education Statistics). That number seems to be rising each and ever year, and it almost seems as students feel like they have to go to college directly after high school. Maybe it is because they feel that they have to fit in, even if college is not for them. Although some students attend college for academics, sports, and other reasons, some students attend college for no apparent reason; with that in mind, students should take into consideration the time and money that is put into going to college.

Over the last few decades, our society has become much more advanced. College is important because our technology has improved rapidly and we need education to continue to grow with our developing economy. We can't expect that tomorrow’s cures will be discovered if the minds of today aren't receiving enough education to flourish. Society today is often very pressuring towards young adults when it comes to attending college. Maybe it’s because it is the most appropriate idea for people. College provides the average human with a higher satisfaction of life due to the experience and the positives outcomes than that of someone who chooses not to go to college. It is a well known fact but there are many people including counselors, parents, teachers, and friends who resist saying it out loud for fear it will sound like discouragement and negativity: college is definitely not for everyone. The pressure on high schools students, especially those that excel, to attend a college or university is enormous. And in the case of a bright, industrious and motivated high school student, attending a college or university is an obvious career choice. For those students, it's only a matter of what university to attend, whether one's SAT score is high enough, and the availability of the money.
