REL 261 – Importance of Submitting Names to the Temple
Becky Johnson Hutchings
Why should you slow down and treat your ancestors as individuals when you
submit their names for temple ordinances, and how can you do this
effectively? As you work with family members and others on their family
trees, how can you help them understand the importance of slowing down
and treating ancestors as individuals when they submit names for temple
ordinances?
These are great questions! I think in life we should all slow down in lots of
areas. We have become too busy in the hustle and bustle. Regarding this
specific question of why we should slow down so we can treat our ancestors
as individuals is a simple one. Doing family history and temple ordinances is
a privilege that we have as being worthy to hold a temple recommend. I
believe that our ancestors watch us as guardian angels in this life. They have
a connection to us. We also have a connection to them. We can make this
connection more worthwhile if we learn a little bit about our ancestors as I
feel that when we do their temple work, these ancestors are in the temple
with us. They are waiting with anxious delight to see their work get done,
some have been waiting a long time!
I firmly believe they will also be
meeting us when we get to the other side to thank us for taking the time to
do their work.
We can help family members understand this concept by helping them get
their own testimony of family history and temple ordinances. When our kids
go the temple, which is once a month, my husband and I go over the temple
names with them and try to find some information about this relative so
when our kids are in the temple doing baptism they can know of this
connection. My husband used to be the one to do this with them, but now,
thanks to this class, I am also able to sit down with our kids and look up
names.
We can do this by looking for information that may be missing. We can also
review family members and look for attached sources that verify the listed
information as well as the sources in the “Record Tips” box. Thanks to this
class, I also learned how to use the tool called “Possible Duplicates” to check
if there are other versions. I also learned to look for missing information in
“Search Records” or other family history websites such as Ancestry, My
Heritage, or Find My Past. We are very blessed to live during this time and
have access to all of this technology. I am also happy that I took this course
to learn how to use this technology more effectively. If we listen to President
Nelson, we know that our goal in life is to help gather Israel. I hope we are all
taking this charge seriously and doing our part.
