Case Study Analysis of Novo Nordisk
Novo Nordisk is a leading multinational pharmaceutical company headquartered in Denmark, specializing in developing and producing innovative medications and devices for treating diabetes and other chronic conditions. In a rapidly changing healthcare landscape characterized by an increasing global prevalence of diabetes, rising healthcare costs, and the need for improved access to care, the company faces numerous challenges in its quest to deliver effective and affordable treatments to patients worldwide.
This case study analysis focuses on two cases involving Novo Nordisk's efforts to address
these challenges through innovative approaches. The first case, published in the European Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies, explores the company's strategy for managing global innovation by leveraging its extensive research and development centers, collaborations with external partners, and knowledge-sharing practices. The second case, a Newstex report, delves into Novo Nordisk's efforts to improve diabetes care and lower associated costs in Turkey, a country with a growing diabetes burden and limited resources for managing the disease.
To better understand the problems and solutions presented in these cases, this analysis employs Morgan's metaphors, a set of theoretical lenses that help to simplify complex organizational issues and facilitate understanding. Morgan's metaphors are used in this analysis to clarify Novo Nordisk's challenges and assess the proposed solutions' validity and effectiveness. In addition, the communication strategies employed in each case and the benefits of using metaphors in management practice are also examined.
Identify the Problem
In the European Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies case, the main business problem identified is managing global innovation in a rapidly changing healthcare landscape. The

metaphor used is the "global brain," which represents Novo Nordisk's emphasis on harnessing collective intelligence from diverse sources worldwide to drive innovation. The metaphor used is
"the bridge," representing the company's effort to build connections between stakeholders and healthcare systems to create a more effective and affordable diabetes care model. Also, in the case study report by Newstex addresses the issue of improving diabetes care and lowering costs in Turkey.
Critical Issues and Proposed Solutions
The following critical issues are ranked in order of importance:
1.
The need for a global approach to innovation and knowledge sharing
2.
The challenge of implementing innovative diabetes care models in emerging markets
3.
The importance of stakeholder collaboration and partnerships
The proposed solutions include:
1.
The establishment of a global innovation network to foster collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation across the organization (European Journal case)
2.
The development of a new diabetes care model in Turkey, focusing on early diagnosis, patient education, and cost-effective treatment options (Newstex case study)
These solutions leverage the metaphor to guide the problem-solving process, which adds a layer of validity to the proposed strategies. In the European Journal case, the "global brain" metaphor highlights the importance of harnessing collective intelligence from diverse sources worldwide, leading to establishing a global innovation network that fosters collaboration, knowledge sharing, and innovation across the organization. This metaphor emphasizes the

JOHNSON & JOHNSON'S DILEMMA
In 1982, seven people in Chicago died after taking Tylenol due to unknown suspect lacing the capsules with cyanide after the products reached the shelves. Tylenol is a drug used to treat mild to moderate pain (from headaches, menstrual periods, toothaches, backaches, osteoarthritis, or cold/flu aches and pain) and to reduce fever.
In the immediate aftermath, Tylenol's commanding 37% market share dropped to just 7% nationwide, despite the problem being contained to the Chicago area. Tylenol was not responsible for the tampering of the product but its manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson, had to do something to maintain the product's reputation.
QUESTIONS:
1. What is the first thing Johnson & Johnson should do to save the brand's
reputation? 2. Should the company continue to sell Tylenol? Why or why not?
3. If Johnson and Johnson decide on selling the product to the market again, what should it do to successfully reintroduce it?
