1 Module Three Short Answer My first choice in cultural works is featured in the “ Kinship” exhibit at The National Portrait Gallery. It is the gifted work of artist Sedrick Huckaby, painted in 2017, and is entitled “Gone but Not Forgotten: Sha Sha” as a memorial tribute to his beloved sister. This self-portrait depicts the artist wearing a t-shirt with his sister's picture and name on the front to commemorate her life. I chose this particular art piece based on my experience with the inspiration behind the painting. My family lost a family member due to domestic violence. During our grief, we chose to honor her life and increase awareness about help and hope for individuals experiencing this by creating t-shirts with her portrait on them along with numbers to agencies of support. This portrait reflects the period in which it was created as it speaks to how families have chosen to honor the lives of loved ones who have transitioned. Wearing these shirts speaks to the love for the individual and the reverence for their life. This observance helps mourners embrace death while celebrating life in many cultures. As family and friends participate in wearing them, it shows unity and strength and provides a keepsake for future remembrance. My second choice is the cultural work of the artist David Lenz. This portrait portrays Eunice Kennedy Shriver and five individuals with intellectual disabilities involved in the Special Olympics and the Best Buddies program. Mrs. Shriver was the inventive mind and driving force behind the creation of the Special Olympics, inspired by her witnessing how unjustly and unfairly people with intellectual disabilities were treated. She desired to create a place to play for children with disabilities. This portrait speaks to her heart for all children affected, regardless of race or ethnicity. My decision to choose this artwork is inspired by the fact I just began research about this program for possible enrollment for my daughter. I was unaware of who started it, but I have been made aware of quite a few opportunities given to children with disabilities through
2 this organization. Children with disabilities are often overlooked and underserved both academically and athletically. Today's members of the Special Olympics, inspired by her heart’s effort, are continuing to expand the program to reach and serve as many individuals as possible. How does this artwork unite diverse cultures? This portrait symbolizes unity and community. It shows that all races and ethnicities are affected by intellectual disabilities. When we embrace that realization, we also can begin to embrace each other. Instead of allowing it to divide us, we can find strength in addressing it and the needs that come with it together. What may appear to be a deficit when united becomes a surplus. It also displays hope for our culture and our community. Dealing with disabilities can often make individuals feel alone. The very brush strokes of this piece encourage the viewer to see you the opposite. The embrace shown also depicts the importance of each person. The glimpse of the sun in this piece also speaks to a brighter future for all affected by intellectual disabilities. References Kittleson, C. (2019, October 31).
